The Importance of Dog Supervision: My Lesson Learned with Cleo

As a dog owner, I understand how important it is to supervise our dogs, especially when they are young and still learning the ropes. Dogs, just like humans, can make mistakes, and it's our responsibility to guide them towards success. Unfortunately, I let my guard down with Cleo and it resulted in her chewing the baseboard molding in my living room.

It happened in a matter of seconds. I turned my back for a moment, and Cleo seized the opportunity to explore and express her natural chewing instinct. By the time I noticed the damage, she had already left the area, and it was too late to reprimand or correct the behavior. I realized that it was entirely my fault for not providing proper supervision and setting her up for success.

This experience taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of dog supervision. Dogs, especially puppies or dogs with limited training, need guidance and supervision to prevent undesirable behaviors, such as chewing, digging, or getting into mischief. It's our responsibility as dog owners to be proactive and attentive, ensuring our companions are safe and well-behaved.

Proper dog supervision goes beyond just preventing destructive behaviors. It also helps to reinforce positive behaviors, such as potty training, recall, and basic obedience. When we actively supervise our dogs, we can praise and reward them for good behaviors, helping them learn and thrive in our homes and communities.

So, what can we do to provide effective dog supervision? Here are some tips based on my experience:

  1. Be proactive: Anticipate your dog's behaviors and intervene before they make poor choices. Keep a close eye on your dog, especially in new or stimulating environments.

  2. Set up for success: Create a dog-friendly environment by removing potential hazards and providing appropriate toys and activities for your dog. Use crates, playpens, or baby gates to limit access to certain areas if needed.

  3. Positive reinforcement: Praise and reward your dog for good behaviors, such as sitting quietly, playing with appropriate toys, or going potty in the designated area. Use treats, toys, or verbal praise to reinforce positive behaviors.

  4. Training and enrichment: Invest time and effort in training and mental stimulation activities to keep your dog engaged and mentally challenged. This helps prevent boredom and destructive behaviors.

As a dog owner and professional dog trainer, my recent experience with Cleo reminded me of the crucial role of dog supervision. It's our responsibility to be proactive, attentive, and set our dogs up for success by providing proper supervision. Not only does it prevent undesirable behaviors, but it also reinforces positive behaviors and helps our furry friends thrive in our homes and communities. So, let's learn from my mistake and ensure that our dogs receive the supervision they need and deserve!
